Matching Gifts guru Steve Hafner shows how to harness employer data
When it comes to nonprofit fundraising, one of the most powerful things you can do is to multiply a single gift. Of course, we're talking about a matching gifts program where the donor's employer matches the gift.
A simple approach is to ask donors to check with their employer to see if their proposed gift can be matched. While this is better than nothing, a far more powerful and effective approach is to already have the information your donor needs to apply for the match — in other words, do the work in advance for the donor. The idea is to make it exceedingly convenient for the donor to request the match.
That's easier said than done. Indeed, just a few years ago, this was a daunting challenge and one that could be accomplished only by the largest institutions with dedicated staff doing the research.
