Does anyone have questions on mobile payments I can help with? Accepting payments at events has changed drastically in the last year, with a broad shift in how to accept payments, from wireless terminals to mobile solutions. (Bidpal style solutions listed as separate topic.) Critical things to consider when choosing a mobile solution: - Will it connect to my existing merchant account? - Does each mobile reader= one new account? - What impact will it have on accounting and reconcilation? - What tools are available for remote user management? Permissions? - How will it impact PCI Compliance requirements? - What is the cost impact? - What devices does it support? What devices do I need to support? EXAMPLES: Square= one merchant account for each card reader and a fixed cost per transaction. There's no monthly fee and no connection to other accounts, making it attractive for smaller non-profits. VeriFone Payware offers enterprise solution; works only on Apple iPad, iTouch and iPhone. There are many others that require merchants to use their merchant account. CenPOS is a scalable enterprise solution that works with existing merchant accounts and is compatible with most smartphone devices, plus laptops/computers with card readers.

BidPal has energized new ways to engage donors at auction events, but there is also a higher cost associated with the service. Please share your BidPal experience. Did additional donations outweigh the service cost? How do you feel the experience will impact future (annual) events? Did you try an alternative service of the same type?

Texting for donations has been a growing hot topic. It's very convenient for the donor, but compared to other methods, very costly for the non-profits. Here are two important resources to help you understand how it works and some of the costs.

It's unclear how non-profits impacted, but hidden in announcement is new fee structure. Read about fees here
