Hi, I'm new to CC, but have long been interested in new ways of thinking about financing and revenues for nonprofits. Right now I'm interested in Social Impact Bonds, where private investors pay up front for social interventions that will reduce costs to government over time. The first SIB was issued in the UK for prisoner reentry services just a couple of years ago. Now the Obama administration has proposed funding for SIBs underwriting workforce development and prisoner reentry in the US. According to this story (
http://bit.ly/ACU6Oy),
several states have begun the process. I would assume that a considerable portion of bond funds would go to nonprofit service providers. Is anyone hearing about this in your work? Anyone working on it?

So, what is your definition of social enterprise? Are your working with a nonprofit that has diversified revenue through earned income? Love to hear some great examples.

Hi Stephen-
I'm excited to see this group here - surprised there aren't more in this group.
What part of social enterprise most interests you? I'm interested in exploring the lines between for profit for social causes (think Tom's Shoes) and nonprofit.
You can find me at smartsocialenterprise.com.
Cheers,
Bret
