  • Eric Berg I am the Donor Relations Officer for ChildVoice International. We operate a rehabilitation center in northern Uganda for formerly abducted Child Soldiers and women and children affected by war. Working out of Minnesota, I am raising awareness of the work ChildVoice is accomplishing and seeking out social justice advocates and new potential donors for the organization.

  • Marcia Fleres I have just joined the group. I have been executive director relatively small nonprofits so I have also been the development person. I currently serve as executive director of two nonprofits, the NJ Education Foundation Partnership, and the West Windsor-Plainsboro Education Foundation. I am a part-time ED at both with no staff.

  • Melanie Ridley I run a small development shop mostly focused on grant writing but considering taking the plunge and starting an individual donor program. Any advice on where to start? What questions I need to be asking my Board or Leadership team?
    • Betty CordellosI'd suggest assessing board buy-in in terms of each director's willingness and ability to support a new program and campaigns which will vary (each according to his/her means) but might include: hosting a cocktail party or event; opening their 'address book' for you; phoning and mailing X#of contacts; calling on potential donors with your CEO or someone from your development office, and of course making his/her own personal financial gift to the organization; making a video appeal etc. Assuming the interest is there, you can then decide if the estimated amount of money you'd raise and new donors you'd get will be worth the added strain on your small shop. That said, it's important to diversify so that you are not as reliant on grants.

    • Melanie RidleyGreat suggestions. Thanks!
      2:14 PM November 04
    • Amy EisensteinHi Melanie - As Betty suggests, start with your board members. Do they have 100 percent particiation (are they all giving)? That's the place to start. Next, look in your database of donors to identify you top 20 donors. Make sure you know them or start to get to know them. Lots more information in my blog posts on this site. Hope that helps.
