I have a proposal put to a private school for a $1 million campaign where I am trying to convince them that they need to do a organizational readiness assessment before they hire any counsel. They want to plunge into this campaign without any real idea what will occur. They feel the pressure because a donor has pledged the land with a timed deadline that is two and half years away. Am I doing the right thing or should I just jump in and hope to be successful?

Hi Tom, apology I have not dropped in for a while so you have probably solved this already. The org read ass you refer to is about testing your client's readiness to ask and your client's constituency's readiness to give. As such it is a critical part of the donor development process. Where a client wont do this step, because they believe they are ready, I always insist on reserving the right to confirm the campaign readiness, three months into it, about when campaign prep has finished.

I believe you are referencing a need for an assessment of the organization's readiness to support the proposed campaign. A campaign readiness study that includes a thorough internal development audit would likely be the best approach for this organization. This type of study would uncover what needs to be done prior to planning and launching a capital effort that has a chance of succeeding.
