Beyond the Requirements: Engaging the Funder Beyond the Grant  will be an overview of the current trends in foundation grantmaking, things to consider when approaching a foundation, creating compelling case statements that align with grantmaking interests and how to build and maintain a relationship with foundation staff. The session will address practical tips for advancing a relationship with foundation staff as well as solutions for getting noticed in a competitive grantmaking environment.  Presenters will speak from their experience and perspectives as a  "fundraiser" and "grantmaker."  The session is designed for basic to intermediate experience levels and the session discussion will be relevant for development staff, grantwriters and Executive Directors.

Topic 2: Creating a Case for Support

Topic 3: What Foundations Consider When Making an Investment

Topic 4: Articulating Relevance

Topic 5: Establishing a Relationship: Identifying Where your Organization is Compatible

Topic 6: Preparing for a Meeting and Site Visit with a Foundation

Topic 7: Cultivating and Maintaining Foundation Relationships

Class Format: This class is recorded from the live class on November 2, 2009. About the Instructors

Derrick Feldmann, CEODerrick Feldmann, CEO

As CEO of Achieve, Derrick provides overall strategic direction for the work of the firm, clients, and partners. He is a regular contributor to nonprofit trade publications and speaker on fundraising, nonprofit management, and strategy for organizations. Prior to founding Achieve, Derrick was responsible for all major development programs at The LEAGUE and Learning to Give organization. His responsibilities beyond fundraising included program expansion, external partnerships, and sponsorship programs where he led efforts to expand the program offerings in four new markets, negotiated in-kind TV campaigns at a value of more than $1 million, and increased fundraising by 200%. Derrick is a graduate of Southeast Missouri State University and holds a Master’s Degree in Philanthropic Studies from Indiana University’s Center on Philanthropy.

Joanna Nixon, Consultant

Joanna NixonJoanna served as Vice President for Grantmaking for the Central Indiana Community Foundation (CICF), one of the 30 largest community foundations in the country.  As Vice President, Joanna developed grantmaking strategies and managed the distribution of $12 million in grants to more than 600 nonprofits annually.  Prior to serving as Vice President, Joanna served as a Grant Officer and managed a diverse portfolio of over 250 nonprofit grantee relationships annually, which included arts and culture, environment, health and human service and youth development organizations.  Joanna is currently a philanthropic consultant to The Efroymson Family Fund, a CICF Fund, which is one of the largest donor advised funds in the country.  Joanna has a degree in Social Work from Indiana University.
