The Good Samaritan Embezzler Contributed by:
Tammy HollandWednesday, March 18, 2009 (4 years 57 days ago)
No one is immune from temptations involving money, but most of us resist the urge to take what does not belong to us. As they say, you can’t judge a book by its cover. For if you could identify a thief by his appearance, white collar crime would be non-existent. In our case, the thief who stole every dime in our bank account was cleverly disguised as a middle-aged, outstanding community leader. Carol, a pseudonym given for the purpose of sharing this sad tale, faithfully served as a board member or officer on several civic clubs. Our organization was devoted to serving troubled children, making this saga all the more despicable. But recently I learned the value of consensus decision making and have changed my outlook. Whereas, I used to engage volunteers in majority-based decision making, I now encourage open discussions that build consensus among individuals. The product of consensus decision is a cohesive group of individuals who agree on common issues while making concessions with one another on divisive issues. The group is transformed and individuals appreciate the each others perspectives. New and better solutions surface and results are innovative. There are, of course, risks to facilitating consensus decision-making that a skilled facilitator must negotiate.

Has Anyone Seen Our Award Winner? Contributed by:
Tammy HollandFriday, January 27, 2006 (7 years 108 days ago)
Why is it that once some volunteers are dubbed award recipients, they seem to fall into an abyss and are never seen nor heard from again? Has this happened in your program? Tammy Vega offers her humble observations on this phenomenon.
