Biography:	Nancy Church, CPA writes and consults as Not-for-Profit Accounting Help. Her mission is to be a resource for accounting and finance staff at nonprofit organizations, assisting them in improving their accuracy, efficiency, professionalism, and enjoyment at their jobs. Resources she has created are Not-for-Profit Accounting: A Very Practical Manual, a 250-page book, and her weekly enewsletter on topics of current interest. You can subscribe at the website in this listing. Nancy has been licensed in the state of Oregon for more than 20 years. During tht time, she spent several years at a national CPA firm, several more at a local one, nearly five years as Director of Finance & Adminstration at Ecotrust (www.ecotrust.org), and has spent many more years consulting with a wide variety of nonprofit organizations with budgets of under $6 million. While her favorite type of project is designing accounting and reporting systems, she specializes in "disaster relief" — when there's a deadline and the accounting staff needs help in meeting it, or when positions are vacant and the books "don't seem right." She also supervises and trains bookkeepers. Prior to entering the field of accounting, Nancy taught English in Germany and to international college students in the US. She lives in Portland, Oregon with her family.

Lessons from Obama

Recent client engagements have reminded me how easy it is to become overwhelmed with requests and expectations from our colleagues. On any given day, you could find that one comes to you for help on a small grant, another is bringing a potential collaborative partner to a meeting at 3, the development assistant “reminds” you – for the first time! – that a grant report is due tomorrow. Your own work plan can get lost amid the distracting requests. It can be challenging to both accomplish it and serve the needs of the organization your department is there to help.


Is That Money Really Yours?

One day a check arrives from a foundation with a letter that says, “We have approved your request for funding and enclosed is a check for $60,000.” Is that money really your organization’s to spend as it wishes? How can your accountant record this transaction correctly?
