About Me
Born a Texan, I grew up in New Mexico, branding calves on an uncle's cattle ranch, going on "digs" with my archaeologist aunt, and learning science from my pharmacist mother. After high school I moved to Kentucky to join a community of women religious, the Ursuline Sisters--who have been educators for almost 500 years, so I was destined to teach. After getting a doctorate in biology from the University of Notre Dame, I taught biology at our Ursuline-sponsored college (now Brescia University) for many years, with a seven-year administrative hiatus as Academic Dean / VP for Academic Affairs.
Recently I finished a six-year term as our community's leader, and took a sabbatical year, in the course of which I served a four-month internship with a non-governmental organization (NGO) that works with the United Nations. With the possible exception of the two summers I studied at the Woods Hole Marine Biology Lab on Cape Cod, that had to be one of the best learning experiences of my life! The NGO I worked with focused on issues involving women, children, and the environment. Living in Manhattan was quite educational, too!
How did I get into my present third career, with that weird background? I love to write and passionately believe in the mission of our university--actually wrote a few small grants when I was Dean. But I rely on mentors like you to help me fill in the gaps in my background! I love advising students, especially those who need help choosing majors and careers...hence the Career Center half of my job.
I am a member of the Sierra Club, a volunteer water quality monitor for three different organizations, and work on the fringes of the Local Foods movement. In my spare time I love to read, do nature study, travel, camp and hike, swim, and nurture a couple of beehives.
