About Me
Meri K. Pohutsky, MA is currently the national Program Manager for Resource Development at Goodwill Industries International. Goodwill Industries® is an international membership organization with a mission to help people find, keep, and advance in good jobs. It is the leading nonprofit provider of job training programs and career services in the United States and Canada. Goodwill has 179 independent affiliates worldwide, using a social enterprise model conceived by Reverend Edgar Helms in 1902. In 2010 Goodwills had collective revenues of $2.69 billion, and served more the 2.4 million people.
Meri is the lead grantwriter for Goodwill Industries International and provides consultation and training related to resource development for resource development professionals in affiliated Goodwills. During her tenure, Meri has been the lead grantwriter on grants resulting in $47.6 million in awards. She contributed significantly to a comprehensive toolkit for resource development specific to Goodwill. Meri provides regular consultations, grant alerts, webinars, and other educational services pertinent to building professional capacity in philanthropy.
Prior to being employed by Goodwill in early 2009, Meri operated her own consulting firm, Meri and Associates, beginning in 1996. This is where she originally began working with Goodwill, as a consultant for professional development and grantwriting. Her contractors as a consultant ranged from start up charities to international organizations. Contractors included Prevent Child Abuse America (IL), National Network for Youth (DC), National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (DC), Communities In Schools of Detroit, Equinox (NY), Pathway Family Services (IN), University of Detroit Mercy (MI), Trinity Health Services (MI), Danialle Karmanos’ Work It Out, Inc. (MI), Arthritis Foundation of Central Ohio, and Aid in Dover (DE), as some of the more prominent contractors. Meri’s skills are in resource development, especially grantwriting, organizational development, marketing, and board training.
She honed her skills as a leader in several nonprofit organizations, with the longest service being as CEO of The Sanctuary. This agency was a small nonprofit operating a shelter for runaway youth she was able to expand to serving homeless youth, providing home-based, and community-based services for youth in at-risk situations and their families. In each leadership position in The Sanctuary, Comprehensive Youth Services, Care House, and the Women’s Counseling Center, she was able to expand services and increase revenues significantly.
Other experiences contributing to her expertise include serving as a grant reviewer and chairperson for federal, state, and United Way grant reviews. She has a long history of volunteer services on Boards or Directors and in local service groups, such as Girl Scouts, Business and Professional Women, county Child Abuse Councils, and centers for domestic violence. Her national Board service includes serving as the Board President and National Policy Council for the National Network for Youth, Board President of the Michigan Network for Youth, and Circle of Parents.
Meri lives in Michigan and is the mother of three daughters,a step-daughter, and has six grandchildren.
