About Me
Johanna currently provides legal diagnostic services to nonprofits, helping organizations identify and work through legal concerns. In addition, she is passionate about nonprofit advocacy, and assists nonprofits in designing or improving their advocacy programs.
With fifteen years of experience in the nonprofit sector, Johanna has extensive knowledge in serving those less fortunate. Her areas of expertise include program management, advocacy and public policy, legal issues for nonprofits, national service programs, volunteer management, workplace volunteering, special event coordination, board management, nonprofit incorporation and coalition-building.
Johanna received a dual B.A. in broadcast journalism and French language/culture at Syracuse University before spending several years studying Mandarin Chinese and teaching English in Taiwan. Upon returning to the states, Johanna served for a year as an AmeriCorps VISTA member at Chicago’s Kovler Center for the Treatment of Survivors of Torture.
Inspired by her AmeriCorps service, she went to law school and received her juris doctorate from De Paul University in Chicago, focusing her studies on international human rights and immigration law. After law school, she continued to work for the public good, serving at Lutheran Refugee Services in Denver, and as Director of the Aurora Volunteer Center.
In 2004, Johanna was appointed to the Colorado Governor’s Commission on Community Service. While serving on the Commission she was elected Chair and worked for three years with both Lieutenant Governor Jane Norton and Lieutenant Governor Barbara O’Brien. Johanna was instrumental in the oversight of the grant review process and distribution of over $2.3 million annually in state AmeriCorps program grants. She provided leadership and strong advocacy in support of volunteerism and community service, and helped achieve the commission’s goals in building partnerships, resource development, program initiatives and decision-making.
Johanna serves as an affiliate faculty member with Regis University’s Master of Nonprofit Management program, teaching classes in advocacy and legal issues for nonprofits. In addition, she is designing an international project with Regis which would take graduate students to Cambodia for several weeks of service work and studies.
In her free time, Johanna travels to far-flung places and enjoys running marathons, hiking, cross country skiing and spending time with family in her birth state of Wisconsin. She lives in Denver with her husband Ernie, son Will and their dog Nina.
