As a nonprofit board member, you have plenty of things to worry about, and so it’s tempting to leave all aspects of the tax information form to the organization’s accountant. Don’t.
The IRS has recently completed its first major overhaul of the Form 990 in 30 years, and the new form places such an emphasis on governance that the board cannot afford to ignore its duties to ensure the organization is run well. This article summarizes the key provisions that your board should examine in order to avoid the embarrassment of being forced to admit its shortcomings publicly (and a possible resulting IRS audit). Fortunately, the changes you make in response to this new form should help you improve your operations and better meet your mission.
