Changing our Message: Communicating the Value of Volunteering to Fix the Looming Volunteer Crisis Contributed by:
Deb AndersonWednesday, September 12, 2007 (5 years 246 days ago)
I recently listened to the audio messages from the “Who Cares” initiative led by Paul Reed and Linda Graff. It’s a sobering message. Volunteering is on the brink of major change that is going to impact our communities in ways that can not even be estimated to their fullest extent. We know that rates of volunteering are declining. Straight Talk: Volunteers and Confidentiality Contributed by:
Deb AndersonWednesday, September 13, 2006 (6 years 245 days ago)
I was recently part of one of those annoying conversations -- yet again -- about the merit of trusting volunteers with confidential information. The worst part of this particular exchange was that the contributors to the discussion all work closely with volunteers. I was flabbergasted to say the least. Initially, I counter-argued their discussion points. A lively debate emerged that was soon taken hostage by the “non-trusters” and I wasn’t able to assert my points. Interviewing - Broaden the View! Contributed by:
Deb AndersonWednesday, August 02, 2006 (6 years 287 days ago)
I fondly recall the days where a volunteer interview was a relaxed, friendly affair over a cup of coffee. It usually occurred in the office library, in the upholstered rocking chairs. The focus: chatting. We chatted ... about the organization, our accomplishments and needs. The candidate revealed their availability and when they could start. Often we talked about our personal lives ... children, jobs, and other volunteer work. I didn't take many notes. My purpose was to make the candidate feel comfortable enough that they would make a commitment and keep it. Wow! Have times changed!

Write the Path to Your Successful Future: Goal Setting 101 Contributed by:
Deb AndersonWednesday, April 05, 2006 (7 years 41 days ago)
Goal setting is a powerful technique that generates strong results. It gives you lasting vision and short-term motivation; helps you organize resources and focus efforts on your priorities; it increases performance, output, pride and satisfaction, as well as providing direction for decision making along the way. Not setting goals carries a high cost as resources; financial, human and otherwise, are not directed towards established outcomes. It results in day after day of reactionary behaviour, otherwise known as "putting out fires."

Forming and Supporting Effective Volunteer Committees Contributed by:
Deb AndersonWednesday, May 04, 2005 (8 years 12 days ago)
Committee can be a loathsome word. It is difficult to recruit members and even more challenging to get them to achieve the goals we’ve set out for them. Why?
