About Me
Dr. Becky Day-Swain, MBA, MscD
Entering the human services field in 1980 as the Assistant Director of the Volunteer Department at Minneapolis Childrens Medical Center, my path has covered a diverse group of agencies, issues and positions. Taking that diversity and capitalizing on it, in 1999, I became the Sole Proprietor of D'Swain Associates, a nonprofit consulting business. My expertise is in transition management and allows me to make an impact on many agencies through providing guidance and services in the areas of strategic planning, organizational development, board development, fundraising, grant writing, volunteer management, marketing and program services.
The depth and breadth of my experience comes from starting at the bottom and working up along with the range of issues and types of agencies. My staff roles have ranged from the Executive Director to the Fund Development and Marketing Director to the Volunteer Director. Human service issues that my career has touched include homelessness, children, healthcare, domestic violence, conservation, recreation, Lutheranism, diabetes, hunger and education. The agency types have included governmental to international nonprofit to grassroots organizations. And the list of the agencies is vast including Ronald McDonald House, Candelighters-Childhood Cancer Foundation of Nevada, Helping Hands of Vegas Valley, The Salvation Army, Las Vegas Indian Center, Rape Crisis Center, Las Vegas Valley Water District (Springs Preserve), Nevada Cancer Institute, United Way of Southern Nevada, UNLV College of Engineering, Classrooms On Wheels, Travelers Aid Society of Los Angeles, Whittier Area First Day Coalition, City of Los Angeles Animal Control and Regulation, AFS Intercultural Programs, Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, Emanuel Lutheran Church and Minneapolis Childrens Medical Center.
One of my first loves is training and teaching. As part of the Certificate of Non-Profit Management program sponsored by the United Way and University of Nevada Las Vegas Professional Development Center, I coordinate the program and teach in the areas of strategic planning, board service, grant writing, fundraising and ethical governance. In addition, I conduct trainings and board retreats on topics ranging from Strategic Planning to Board Service to Grant Writing to Volunteer Management to Networking.
My Bachelor is from the University of Minnesota-Morris with majors in Human Services and German. My Master is in Business Administration from Woodbury University in Burbank, CA. In 2010, I completed my Doctor of Metaphysical Science through the University of Sedona. My studies focused on the study of dreams, and added dream interpretation and guidance 1:1 sessions and workshops to my work. Also the program includes my ordination as a minister and licensing to officiate weddings and the lead Pastor for Natures Spiritual Center. Currently I was accepted into a Chaplain certificate and training program. An outcome of my studies has been the ability to continue my nonprofit focus while integrating my metaphysical and pastoral training to further meet my consulting business, D'Swain Associates mission of impacting the health and wellness of the nonprofit community.

The Independent Sector: Are you prepared for the next shift? (Part 2) Contributed by: Becky Day-SwainThursday, October 25, 2012 (200 days ago) In my article “The Independent Sector: Are you prepared for the next shift?” two weeks ago, I asked you to mull over this question: What is the next shift? This is an important conversation that all nonprofits need to be engaged in and part of. ______
The Independent Sector: Are you prepared for the next shift? (Part 1) Contributed by: Becky Day-SwainThursday, October 11, 2012 (214 days ago) Over the last decade the independent sector has seen and experienced some major shifts that the majority of our agencies have survived. Did you see the shifts coming? Did you use the shifts to become stronger? Or was your agency or client weakened from the shifts, perhaps even closing its doors, too weak and ill-prepared for the changes? ______
Professional Development – Invest in Yourself Contributed by: Becky Day-SwainWednesday, April 13, 2011 (2 years 32 days ago) Often you are so busy investing your time and energy in your agency and writing grants for their needs that you are forgotten. Your agency needs you operating at 100%....and right now, they need you at 100% all the time. We all know what happens when we are operating at 90%. That’s the time when your proposals are denied funding because you forgot a signature or you missed the deadline because it was 5:00 p.m. EST not PST. Or the ultimate embarrassment occurs – you had another funder’s name in the narrative that you cut and pasted.

Beware! Choose a grant writing workshop with care! Contributed by: Becky Day-SwainWednesday, March 02, 2011 (2 years 74 days ago) Over the last decade, grant writing has become one of the top scam opportunities. Often we only hear about the person who was promised that they could access “all that free money,” laid out $795, $2,500 or more…and didn’t receive anything in return but a charge to their credit card. ______
Grant Writing – I Can Survive! Contributed by: Becky Day-SwainWednesday, November 11, 2009 (3 years 185 days ago) While there is no typical week when you’re a grant writer, sometimes the routine must be noted. As a grant writer, Monday is my favorite day. It’s proof that I survived the weekend and the stress of trying not to work (much less trying not to think about all those looming grant deadlines). Whew! I’m starting my week off exhausted from not trying to do so much. ______
The Grant Writer Job Description: Responsible for Pulling a Rabbit Out of a Hat Contributed by: Becky Day-SwainWednesday, August 05, 2009 (3 years 283 days ago)
If you had not previously had the experience of your boss looking to you to pull a rabbit out of a hat holding money in its paws, I am guessing that, with the economic downturn, you have by now. Know that you have been officially initiated into the life of a grant writer. Welcome! ....
[T]here are ways to alleviate the stress during good and bad times by organizing your grant writing tools to loosen up more time for researching and developing new funder relationships. The key tools are....
