Many years ago when I worked for a university medical center in the development office, a physician, who was working with me on a fund raising project, once said in frustration, “Shelley, I went to medical school so I wouldn’t have to deal with this....”

I have a confession to make. As the daughter of a middle school English teacher, I had a bad habit of dozing off during middle and high school English classes. For the longest time, the rules of grammar came easy to me. Perhaps I learned them through osmosis? Was it part of my genetic makeup thanks to my mother? While others were struggling, I knew I could write papers quickly. On a regular basis, I could write a term paper in one night, turn it in with very little editing, and get a good grade.

A couple of weeks ago I attended a development training seminar where we participated in role playing exercises to practice our fundraising ‘ask’. We were divided into teams of two -- one person acting as the fundraiser and the other person playing the role of funder. Several of the participants said after the exercise that the difficult part of role playing was not making the ‘ask,’ instead it was playing the role of the funder.
