Program officers are often overwhelmed with more paper than they can possibly read, which means that long reports are unlikely to be read from start to finish. This is not an invitation to ignore requests for reports, or to produce sub-par work. If anything....

In general, an invitation to submit a full proposal is an indication that the project has made it past the first round of cuts. The invitation, however, should not be taken as a guarantee that the project is going to be funded. There are still several opportunities for a program officer to turn down a request after a proposal has been invited.

Over the years I have written countless inquiries to foundations and corporations seeking support for (in my view) extremely worthwhile projects. While not all of them led to grants, they are a critical step in building relationships with donors, and if crafted with an eye toward what donors really want to see, can pave the way for future funding.

I relish the days that I can spend a few uninterrupted hours wrestling with writing a good proposal. However, I also take great pride in the relationships I have built, and the fact that I can successfully guide the process of developing a winning grant proposal from start to finish.

A day in the life of any grant writer is full of competing demands for time. Understanding how to balance these demands in a way that satisfies all parties, and also brings in the most money, is critical to succeeding in this career.
