Biography:	The firm of DiVirgilio & Associates, is committed to assisting faith-based organizations/ministries, nonprofit organizations and government agencies to obtain funding to meet the needs of the communities in which they serve. All services provided are overseen and directed by Debbie DiVirgilio. Ms. DiVirgilio has more than 18 years experience in the nonprofit sector where she has been successful in obtaining foundation, corporate, and government grant funding. With a background in a variety of nonprofit organizations, Ms. DiVirgilio possesses the knowledge and experience to assist nonprofits throughout their life cycle. She has served as a federal grant reviewer for the U.S. Department of Education TRiO Programs. She frequently writes articles on various topics that are relevant to grant-seekers and grant managers. She has expertise in program development and a background in program evaluation. Ms. DiVirgilio holds a Master’s Degree in Nonprofit Management and a Bachelor’s Degree in Behavioral Sciences. She is a member in good standing of the American Association of Grant Professionals.

As grant professionals, we know that our writing must be clear and accurate as we work to express our message to the reader. We are also all aware of the necessity for brevity as we encounter more and more electronic applications that limit our responses to a certain number of characters or words. Using deadwood phrases in our writing has the potential to make our proposals “dead on arrival.” Here's how to avoid them.


Henry Berman Offered Sage Advice at the GPA Conference

At the 2012 Grant Professionals Conference in Indianapolis, Henry Berman, Chief Executive Officer of the Association of Small Foundations, was one of the featured speakers. Mr. Berman provided conference attendees with keys to success when seeking grant funds from foundations. I thought it would be valuable to briefly share in this article his major points and something of my own thoughts along the way.
