Volunteer Screening: Are You Using your Intuition -- or Bias?

Wednesday, December 05, 2001

Volunteer resource managers are fond of and often applauded by trainers for trusting their intuition when screening applicants for suitability for volunteer projects.  While many volunteer managers wisely use screening tools such as position descriptions, applications, references and even criminal background screening, they will often divulge a "gut feeling" that someone is "just not right."  And they generally turn the applicant down based solely on that very subjective feeling.

Online Direct Marketing for Nonprofits (Part 1)

Monday, November 26, 2001

...Since then, science has taken his miraculous device and over time turned it into a medium we now refer to as the Internet. The web accepts signals and sends them in nanoseconds with text, pictures, and sound. How nonprofits use this technology may well be an indication of how they fare financially in the future. Why? Because most traditional fundraising pleas now being sent by direct mail will be replaced by lower cost, more effective email messages.

Why Don't They Appreciate our Volunteers?

Wednesday, November 21, 2001

It's a common lament: organization staff sometimes don't seem to appreciate the volunteers you provide for them.  They drag their feet.  They complain.  They turn the volunteer away everyday.  Sometimes they go so far as to sabotage everything you've worked to build.

Online Volunteer Management: Recruitment, Management & Retention

Monday, October 22, 2001

Efficient volunteer recruitment, management, and retention are some of the most under-rated strengths of the nonprofit sector. In some circles, it is even said that the first paid staff member of an NPO should be the volunteer coordinator. Learning how to use online tools to manage volunteers can help with the mammoth task of volunteer management.

Taking On-Line Donations - Lessons Learned from September 11th

Monday, October 08, 2001

Obviously the importance of on-line fundraising changed dramatically after the phenomenal outpouring of donations for the tragedies in New York, DC and Pennsylvania. Within 19 days of that terrible day, several hundred million dollars have been collected using the web. The largest databank of on-line donors has been gathered and the potential for future web fundraising and communication for the non-profits supporting the relief efforts has increased exponentially.

I'm a small nonprofit, how do I build a Web site?

Monday, October 01, 2001

ASP's -- How could such a sure fire concept not succeed as a newbusiness every single time?

Monday, September 24, 2001

In our previous two segments of this series on ASP's, both of us expounded upon the many benefits and outstanding facets of the business model. (See Part One and Part Two of this series) Many of our readers are surely now curious as to why so many new ASP (Application Service Provider)-based businesses have either failed or are in some difficulty. Perhaps there is no single set of reasons, however both authors believe there are several extremely strong clues that might please even Columbo or the master Sherlock Holmes!

How do you choose the products and services that will help you accomplish your goals without putting yourself at risk?
