Grants and Foundations Review. Some of my colleagues have noticed the new letters that follow my name: GPC. One colleague wrote, "I know what J.D. is (Juris Doctor), but what is GPC?" If you are an organization that employs grant writers, or a colleague who writes grants, or even a lawyer like me who advises grant-making foundations, you will be interested in the article Grant Professional Certification is Here! by Michael Wells, editor of Grants and Foundations Review.
Law of Tax-Exempt Organizations (U.S.). The article category "Law of Tax-Exempt Organizations - U.S." is in the concept stage. Attorney Mark Weinberg has contributed a sample article, At Your Service, that serves as an example of the kinds of articles that would be contributed by members of the CharityChannel professional community. Please let us know your thoughts. Would you like to see more articles on the law of tax exempt organizations in the U.S.? In other countries? We are particularly interested to hear from lawyers with an expertise in the field; if this is you, would you be willing to contribute original articles that are written in a down-to-earth style that would be of strong practical value to busy nonproft-sector professionals? Let us know your thoughts.
Nonprofit Boards and Governance Review. Executive Directors who dump a pile of financials in front of board members, expecting them to have the background and expertise necessary to make heads or tails of them, are not meeting their obligations to the board, according to the latest NBGR article by Sherry Jennings. Taking the point of view of a new board member, she writes, "Most of the financial information was incomprehensible to Martin. What was nagging at Martin was that he didn’t feel like he had a complete 'picture' of what was going on. The information he had plodded through last night seemed like a box of spare parts."' In If I’m Not Running the Train, How Do I Know We’re On Track? the author uses a down-to-earth story-telling method to drive the point home and offer up the solution.
Latest Discussion Forum Threads
There are a number of new threads that are just getting started and a number of the CharityChannel discussion forums. This week we highlight the threads in the Development Office forum:
A colleague asked, in the thread Acknowledgement Letter Laws, "What is the current law regarding keeping copies of acknowledgement letters for gifts? Is it gifts only over $250 or more and do the copies have to be signed or can they be unsigned? Also, are electronic copies enough? Just trying to re-confirm current best practices."
A colleague asked her colleagues to share their insights/answers/best practices on this quesiton: "What do I do if the donor won't agree to a visit or never returns my calls so that I can request a visit?" See the thread Getting Appointments/Visits.
A colleague wrote "I'm curious to know how folks process event ticket payments. Do you enter only the portion that is tax deductible, the entire amount in your database, or something else altogher? Do you use a special source code to identify it is a ticket purchase? Any light you can shed on this will be deeply appreciated.. See the thread Gift Processing.
A colleague wonders, "Does anyone know a ballpark price range for hiring a Board Facilitator?"
A coleague wrote "My organization is investigating ratings systems as a marketing tool. What ratings systems are available for nonprofits? I'm familiar with Charity Navigator's 4-star rating, and Charity Review Council's accountability standards. What else is out there? And what are the relative merits of each?" See the thread Ratings Systems.
