About Me
Vernetta Walker, JD, is vice president of consulting and training and a BoardSource senior governance consultant. Vernetta has over 20 years of combined experience in law and consulting and training in the nonprofit sector. Her expertise readily lends itself to areas such as legal compliance, complex governance structures and exceptional board practices, as well as board education and problem resolution for start-ups to well-established organizations. Some of her clients include Habitat for Humanity, Corporation for Public Broadcasting, YMCA, and Concordia University System, among others.
In her role as the vice president of consulting and training, Vernetta is responsible for overseeing the provision of consulting services and training programs to BoardSource clients throughout the country using both staff consultants and a pool of uniquely talented external consultants. Vernetta also leads BoardSource's diversity and inclusion work, to help boards lead the charge in creating inclusive cultures and organizations.
Prior to joining BoardSource, Vernetta served as associate general counsel and director of the Advocacy Leaders Program for the Maryland Association of Nonprofit Organizations; foundation advocacy counsel for the Alliance for Justice; and director of administration of justice grants for the Florida Bar Foundation. Vernetta also practiced law for several years in Orlando, Florida.
Vernetta was a contributing author to Nonprofit Management 101: A Complete and Practical Guide for Leaders and Professionals, a Jossey-Bass publication (2011); and Investing in Change: A Funder's Guide to Supporting Advocacy, an Alliance for Justice publication (2004). She has served on several boards, including Planned Parenthood and Lynx (Orlando's regional transportation authority). She received her juris doctor from Washington University School of Law, St. Louis, MO, and her bachelor of arts from the University of Maryland, College Park, MD. She is admitted to the Florida and Maryland state bars.
