A year ago, at what now is considered the height of the financial crisis, I wrote about the potential impact of the impending economic collapse on grant seeking. (See, Grant Seeking in Tough Economic Times, Grants and Foundations Review, October 8, 2008.) Today, with perfect 20/20 hindsight, I would like to take on the bold and humbling task of assessing my predictions and see if it is time to trade in my gas-guzzling crystal ball for a more efficient model.

Are you scared yet? Based on the daily barrage of bad financial news, we seem to be in the midst of a global economic meltdown. And, given the psychological underpinnings of our financial systems, the reasons, causes or facts behind the crisis really do not matter. Businesses are going under and the stock market is dropping. So, what does this mean for grant seekers?

There is an axiom in the grant profession, oft-repeated (at least by me) that goes, "If you've seen one foundation, you've seen one foundation." The saying captures the heterogeneity of grant makers and the difficulty with making generalities about how they behave or see the world. In recent years, I've come to wonder if it is true. I wonder if you can really even know one foundation.

So, you got the call. The foundation you went to for that big grant wants to come see your organization at work. This is great news. Although it is no guarantee of funding -- something the program officer is likely to tell you -- it means you have survived several levels of weeding out and are on the precipice of funding. Foundation program officers and trustees are busy people and do not waste their time on courtesy calls. If they come to perform a site visit, chances are they want to fund you. Can you blow it? Sure. But here are a few pointers that can help you seal the deal:
