About Me
Simone P. Joyaux, ACFRE is described internationally as one of the nonprofit sector’s “most thoughtful, inspirational and provocative leaders.” She provides consulting services in fund development, board and organizational development, strategic planning, and management. Clients—located throughout the U.S. and in other countries—include all types and sizes of nonprofits/NGOs.
Speaking/training: Simone speaks internationally—presenting at the International Fundraising Congress in The Netherlands, the Italian fundraising conference, and conferences in Australia, New Zealand, Paris, Mexico City, Brussels, and throughout North America. Since 2000, she has served as a faculty member for the Master of Arts in Philanthropy and Development Program at Saint Mary’s University, Minnesota. Joyaux also develops and delivers curricula in governance and fund development for various organizations, including community foundations.
Publications: Her 2007 book, Keep Your Donors: An Essential Guide to Better Communications and Stronger Relationships, co-authored with Tom Ahern, receives rave reviews. Her book Strategic Fund Development: Building Profitable Relationships That Last—called a classic—was first published in 1997, with the third and expanded edition published in March 2011 by John Wiley & Sons.
Joyaux blogs at www.simonejoyaux.com and writes a semi-monthly web column for the Nonprofit Quarterly, www.nonprofitquarterly.org. She has authored monographs and published articles since 1981—including materials for the U.S. Department of Labor CETA program for artsworkers.
Awards: Joyaux received Rhode Island’s 2003 Outstanding Philanthropic Citizen Award for “significant contribution as a donor and volunteer”; and, the 1987 Outstanding Fundraising Executive Award for her contribution as a professional. In 2010, she was recognized with Leadership Rhode Island’s top award for commitment to the community and inspiring others.
Certification in fundraising: In 1994, Joyaux was one of the first to achieve the credential of Advanced Certified Fund Raising Executive (ACFRE). She is one of a small group worldwide holding advanced certification in the profession, accomplished through a rigorous peer review process that demonstrates an advanced level of fundraising knowledge and professional competency.
Sector experience and commitment: Joyaux has more than thirty-five years experience as staff (executive director and chief development officer), consultant, and board member in the nonprofit sector. As a volunteer, Simone serves regularly on boards, often as chair. She’s founded two organizations, the Women’s Fund of Rhode Island, a social justice organization, and the first statewide arts advocacy organization in Rhode Island. From 1999 through 2001, Joyaux served as Chair of the Board of CFRE International—the baseline credentialing program for fundraisers. During her tenure, the program achieved its independence and established itself internationally.
For Simone, philanthropy is both an avocation and vocation. She volunteers an average of ten hours per week while working full time. Simone and her life partner contribute at least 10 percent of their income to charity annually and have bequeathed their entire estate to charity.
