The next time you need to recruit volunteers who can support your organisation during the daytime, where are you going to go -- to those people with time to spare in front of daytime TV, or to those people with time to give during the day through EV?

When I was invited to run this seminar I asked myself "How often does a chance like this come along? A chance to positively influence how people outside our sector view volunteers before they take the step of working for a charity?". The answer was, to my mind, "very rarely" and came to me about as quickly as it took for me to say 'yes' to the invitation.

Having worked in the volunteerism field for eight and a half years I have come to accept the fact that we get paid poorly and treated with less respect than other professionals in the voluntary sector. However, every now and then something re-awakens my desire to campaign hard to change this and educate others about the essential nature of our work and our importance to the survival of the voluntary sector.

Being an untypical Englishman I speak my mind about issues close to my heart, especially where volunteering and volunteer management are concerned. One of my current crusades is to tackle the apparent absence of volunteers undertaking volunteer management roles alongside paid managers of volunteers.
