An umbrella organization in the not-for-profit sector is an entity that serves the common, shared needs of its member organizations. The purpose of an umbrella organization is typically to coordinate positions on issues and to organize activities. Often it is also to pool resources for the shared good and speak with one voice on matters related to its core purpose.

Much has been written and is easily available via an internet search on how to be an effective committee chair. Key points include:
- Lead by example: be prepared, punctual and positive
- Establish and stay focused on your strategic objectives
- Follow procedures and get committee member buy-in
- Delegate, evaluate and appreciate.

What is risk management?
It is the active process of identifying and assessing risks and developing responsive action plans. It is a way of thinking and taking action throughout an organization in order to better manage risk and better take advantage of opportunities that present themselves. While many not-for-profit organizations have planned how best to respond to dilemmas through a crisis management plan, such plans do not typically cover the broad spectrum of risk to which organizations are susceptible.
