Seven Pillars of Democratic Governance Contributed by: Mel GillWednesday, May 06, 2009 (4 years 8 days ago) Most discussions about governance assume that everyone involved has the same notion of just what "governance" means. In fact, there may be substantial differences in understanding of what it does mean. So the best starting point in any discussion is a common definition, to ensure that everyone is on the same page. The definition offered here is based on an extensive review of governance literature and validation through my research, teaching and consulting experience. ______
What's in Your Annual Report? Contributed by: Mel GillWednesday, May 07, 2008 (5 years 7 days ago) A properly prepared annual report can be a powerful tool for an organization’s board and senior management to assess past performance and for transparent accounting to key stakeholders for the manner in which its business is conducted; resources are utilized; and results achieved. The best annual reports can serve as a ‘beacon’ that motivates other organizations to examine their own accountability practices and guide them to strengthened reporting. This article reports on research on the characteristics of 'best in class' annual reports. ______
What Type of Board do you want 'Yours' to Be? Contributed by: Mel GillWednesday, November 01, 2006 (6 years 195 days ago) A nonprofit organization recently asked me to help them figure out “what type of board they wanted to be?” This reminded me of discussions with a colleague who suggests that directors should engage in an existential introspection of “what it means to be a board member” and “what it means to be a board” as a starting point for improved governance. ______
Board Assessment? Why Bother? Contributed by: Mel GillThursday, May 11, 2006 (7 years 4 days ago) Call to order!
The board chair has called order for the regular monthly meeting of your nonprofit board. You’re asked to speak to an item that you placed on the agenda: board assessment, a matter that’s been on your mind for some time. “I think we should assess how well we’re doing as a board.” “What do you mean?” says one of your colleagues. “Well,” you reply, “how do we know if we’re contributing anything of value to the effectiveness of this organization, unless we have a good grasp on what our responsibilities are and how well we’re performing them?” ______
Good Governance and Board/Staff Relations Contributed by: Mel GillThursday, January 19, 2006 (7 years 116 days ago) Woody Allen once said that 80% of life is just showing up. The other 20% is where it gets complicated. Success demands learning, knowledge, creativity, hard work and pragmatism; more than "just showing up." So it is with the demands of serving on a board. ______
Confused About Governance Models? You're not alone! Contributed by: Mel GillThursday, November 03, 2005 (7 years 193 days ago) What difference do boards really make to nonprofit organizations? What is governance anyway? How can boards add value to organizations? How can we evaluate their performance? What do you think about the "policy governance" model? What are the alternatives? These are some of the questions about boards repeatedly expressed since the early nineties. ______
Governing for Results - Essentials of an Added-Value Approach Contributed by: Mel GillThursday, September 08, 2005 (7 years 249 days ago) Most directors of boards don't simply want to fill a chair at the board table or a line in their resume. They want to add value to the organization they serve and add benefit for its members and clients. And they want to be helpful to the CEO, rather than an extra burden or thorn in the side -- although any long-serving CEO will have had some share of the latter.
