While the idea of fundraising can send shivers up the spine of some of the most experienced board members and a few executive directors as well, I contend that the real dilemma for many of those most fearful is that they don’t understand that fundraising is much, much more than asking for the gift. And that yes, they can succeed at fundraising.

How can I get my board more involved in fundraising? When we ask nonprofit leaders to share their most daunting challenges, they frequently regale us with sagas of boards with amazing passion for the organization but yet an unexplainable inability or even lack of will to transform that passion into fundraising.
Because we’ve heard that same answer so often, we’ve developed an array of suggestions, strategies and techniques to help organizations and board members overcome what many refer to as the “fear of fundraising”. While the idea of fundraising can send shivers up the spine of some of the most-experienced board members and a few executive directors as well, I contend that the real dilemma for many of those most fearful is that they don’t understand that fundraising is much, much more than asking for the gift. In Austin, Texas, a group of nonprofit and community leaders recently gathered to explore the question of whether Central Texas has too many nonprofit organizations. Using data from a variety of sources and their own insights on nonprofits and the region, Matt Kouri, executive director of Greenlights for NonProfit Success, and Deborah Edward, Ph.D., RGK Center for Philanthropy and Community Service, led the discussion. They spotlighted some interesting facts and figures and offered strategies for addressing the situation.

Successful development means building relations with a variety of constituencies, including foundations. Nonprofit organizations, some with no development staff or one person handling development as well as marketing and public relations, address this challenge with a variety of strategies ranging from outsourcing to recruiting volunteers to involving more staff members in the grants process. Organizations can build successful grants teams with "inside" and "outside" volunteers.

Many larger development offices utilize discovery visits get acquainted with potential individual donors. These initial visits provide critical information that often results in establishing a connection between the prospect and the organization, identifying mutual interests and determining the possibility of future involvement and investment. More and more organizations and their development staff are finding that discovery visits can often be the starting point for building a long-term relationship with a foundation just as they often do with potential individual donors.
