Lately, there has been several postings to the Grants Forum related to processes uses by Grants Offices to coordinate grant efforts. Coming from a higher education institution and now working with literally all of New York State's colleges, universities, and non-profit research facilities there is a real need to spell out the responsibilities of every one involved in the pursuit of a grant. As with most processes, you must consistently follow your specific design or your process will unravel to the point of total frustration.

Lately, on several of the grants-themed forums there has been a surge in the number of requests for information related to policy and processes associated with grants offices. That question is difficult to answer because every grants office tends to serve different needs at different size institutions catering to different types of support.

A question I hear a lot from the grants courses I teach is what computer, software or other utilities are the best for preparing grants. Of course, the standard answer of "it depends" is never enough so this article will attempt to lay out what tools I've found to be most useful over the years.

As someone who regularly teaches grants writing and budgeting, I can tell you that opinions regarding budgetary tactics, strategies and organization are varied and for good reason. Budgets need to be customized to the proposal under development.
