TRUE STORY*: I received a call two weeks ago from a friend. He was in the midst of a board meeting for his favorite nonprofit organization, and he needed help. Ms. May B. Rich had approached the organization about making a $35 million gift. Ms. Rich would make her gift after she sold what she described as a very valuable art collection. Ms. Rich wanted the Board to pass a resolution stating that it would name a new education center in honor of Ms. Rich and that they would host a number of events to showcase the art. With the board ready to act, my friend needed to know if Ms. Rich was for real or not and he only had 45 minutes to find out.
