About Me
Jim Brown is a Grant Specialist for WFYI Public Media in Indianapolis. Since October 1970, WFYI, as the flagship public broadcasting station in Indiana, has served millions in its mission to amplify the voices of our community and by serving as a trusted catalyst for lifelong learning through the continuous development and dissemination of distinctive programs and services.
WFYI Public Media's efforts include:
- digital public television channels WFYI 1, WFYI 2 (Spanish language station V-Me, and WFYI 3, which features the national PBS Create Channel as well as the Indiana Channel;
- public radio 90.1FM and HD1 & HD2/The Point stations;
- an effective and growing community outreach program led by veteran vice president Gail Thomas Strong, including the recent choice by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting of WFYI as one of only 20 "community hub" participating in the new American Graduate: Let's Make It Happen initiative, which is designed to highlight aware of the high school dropout crisis and to work together with community partners to design educational and preventive measures with the hopes of assisting school administrators, teachers and parents with their efforts to increase the high school graduation rate in Indiana;
- the Indiana Information & Reading Service (IRIS), a free broadcast sub-frequency service that utilizes hundred of volunteers each week who read news articles, book, timely advertisements and other materials to citizens who are blind and/or print-impaired with the goal to increase their ability to live and work independently; and
- special WFYI annual events designed to entertain small children (Let's Meet PBS Kids in the Park, held each summer in downtown Indianapolis), to educate women about their health, and to help Indy professionals network together in a fun night of wine tasting (WFYI's annual ICEMILLER Winefest).
Jim oversees the grant acquisition and management function for one of the top 20 PBS stations in the country, which recently won the coveted PBS Development of the Year award.
Jim has been involved with the development of efforts that have raised more than $1.2 million for WFYI in foundation and related support, including the Christel DeHaan Family Foundation, Margaret A. Cargill Foundation, Indianapolis Foundation, Allen Whitehill Clowes Charitable Foundation and Lilly Endowment
Jim's previous work includes travel and aviation, commercial airline and general business and destination writing and public relations executive jobs at companies such as McGraw-Hill, American Airlines, Trans World Airlines and AirTran Airways.
