About Me
Debra Berg founded the National Institute for Civic Enterprise (NICE) and became its director in 2007. As with any civic entrepreneur who’s blazing a new trail, she’s worn several hats. She’s grateful that, in the process, volunteers and donors have eagerly come forward to help support the NICE mission.
It was the research for The Power of One: The Unsung Everyday Heroes Rescuing America’s Cities that first fueled Debra’s enthusiasm for the creativity and innovation of civic entrepreneurs. An eight-year, self-funded, trek to thirty cities forged dozens of lasting relationships. Since then, she’s had opportunities to share their inspirational stories with live audiences, the Chicago Sun Times, Sky Radio, Family Circle, and over 80 radio and TV stations across the nation. To reach an even broader audience, Debra hosted VoiceAmerica.com’s talk show, "The Power of One: What's Your Mission?” which drew thousands of listeners.
The author, speaker, nonprofit seminar leader, coach, and internet marketer spent her childhood and college years in the “Illini country” of East Central Illinois and earned her B.A. in political science/economics and masters of public administration (MPA) at the University of Illinois. Interested in local solutions even as an undergrad, she was recognized as a Charles E. Merriam Scholar for her research on Illinois local government. She chose to round out her education by working on The Hill for a U.S. congressman during the Watergate hearings and as an editor for the IRS.
In the seventies and eighties, when few women were employed on legislative staffs, Debra had a unique opportunity to work for three of them. She was first employed as a legislative analyst for the Illinois Senate Appropriations and Local Government Committees and then as a budget and program analyst for the Kentucky Legislative Research followed by a stint at the Minnesota Legislative Audit Commission. During those experiences, she authored studies on education and chemical dependency and analyzed social welfare budgets into the billions of dollars.
In the late eighties, Debra did a career switch to the nonprofit sector when Minnesota's largest HMO recruited her as a senior finance analyst. Eventually, she capitalized on her financial skills to establish TeamNet International, a marketing and training company, spanning the U.S., Mexico, and the Netherlands. The company’s success led to her recruitment by the wireless software industry where she supported major clients like Southern Companies and Nextel.
For the past fifteen years, Debra has reinvested her public policy and business experience in her passion for America’s civic and social entrepreneurs. Prior to launching NICE, she formed Power of One Publishing, LLC, a research, publishing, and speaking effort for the express purpose of promoting their successes. In addition to managing NICE in conjunction with Homes That Change Lives, Debra is a volunteer for her church and several local charities. She and her husband, Paul, the city manager of Eustis, Florida, have two grown daughters, Julie and Janie.
Debra is available to speak to groups ranging from 25-10,000. She conducts nonprofit seminars on marketing, visibility, and fundraising. And, she's available for coaching on the same topics. Contact her at debra@NICENetwork.org or call 352-589-5981,
