About Me
Buzz Harris is a professional fundraiser and apostle of the fundraising arts. He specializes in training fundraisers at public interest, nonprofit organizations. He serves as Executive Director of the Development Resource Center where he and his colleagues provide a comprehensive fundraising and governance curriculum for the Third Sector. He has worked with nonprofit groups since 1986. He is a former field organizer for National Gay & Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF), the former Regional Director of Development for Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders (GLAD), and served as a trustee on the boards of SpeakOut, the Bisexual Resource Center, the New Thinking Institute, MassEquality, and the MassEquality Education Fund, among others. He has trained new Directors of Development at RESIST (a national grant-making foundation), Neighbor to Neighbor (the Massachusetts branch of a community advocacy group), the Center for Campus Organizing, and Boston Mobilization (an anti-war group). He has instructed numerous boards of trustees in fundraising and board service skills, including the National Association of Parents of the Visually Impaired, Outright Vermont, the Transgender Political Coalition of Massachusetts, the Brazilian Women’s Group of Greater Boston, and SpeakOut. He has been a presenter at Creating Change (conference of the National Gay & Lesbian Task Force), OutWrite, and the New England Regional conference of BiNet USA, among others. He has been interviewed for the Associated Press, Agence France Presse, Reuters, The New York Times, USA Today, The Wall Street Journal, MSN.com, CNN.com, the Dallas Morning News, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, New York Daily News, the Seattle Times, the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Chicago Sun-Times,the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, Detroit News,the Baltimore Sun, The Oregonian, The Hill, Ms., Rhode Island Magazine, The Improper Bostonian, the Boston Metro, Bay Windows (Boston), The Washington Blade, and All America Talk Radio. He hosts a television program in the Boston area, The Nonprofit Clinic, which educates nonprofit and public interest groups about fundraising, administration, board governance, legal compliance, and a range of other topics. He has been a contributing writer to DemocraticUnderground.com, and he publishes the Nonprofit Development Quarterly newsletter through the Development Resource Center. He pens a monthly column called “The Nonprofit Clinic” published by several foundations nationwide.
