When approaching a foundation for the first time, the person doing the talking for the grant seeker is the face of the organization. How you handle the initial approach will result in the grant seeker taking either two steps forward or three steps backwards in terms of establishing a relationship with the program officer.

When I was brand new to grant writing, I spent a lot of time pulling together all of the supporting documentation and attachments needed for each grant—the executive director had a few of the items, program officers others, etc. For some reason it never occurred to me to consolidate all of the required documentation or attachments into one place.

For many social service organizations, it is a great challenge to track client progress and successes for grant reporting. Clients move to new apartments, have phone numbers disconnected, change jobs, etc -- all of which can make continued contact very difficult...Here are a few ways that we did it (we used all of them with the theory that the more opportunities clients had to share information, the more likely that information would be shared!):...

I certainly know from my experience as a grant writer that I often put considerable effort into creating a masterpiece narrative describing my organization and its programs, only to save the budget for last which resulted in some errors, omissions, or material items left unexplained on a budget. So here are a few things to consider or think about so that you can present meaningful budget information to your funders:
