About Me
Bob Carter is Senior Advisor to Changing Our World. He is also Senior Advisor to Omnicom Nonprofit Group. Bob joined Changing Our World following a 26-year career with Ketchum, one of the largest firms in the fundraising industry.
In his role as Senior Advisor of Changing Our World, Bob brings a rich background and experience in fundraising, as well as organizational and structural change in nonprofits. Working with complex regional, national and international organizations, he works with institutions to design specific strategies based on individual cultural realities to maximize positive outcomes. His service as board member and chair of numerous not-for-profit boards lends firsthand experience to his governance counsel. His experience in counseling CEOs as well as major donors around the globe also positions him for understanding effective strategies for engaging philanthropists in productive rewarding ways. It is the breadth of Bob’s institutional experience that enables him to develop strong strategies for fundraising success.
As President of Ketchum, Bob led the firm's sales/marketing team and provided senior-level development and campaign counsel to a broad cross-section of gift-supported organizations throughout the United States and North America.
He served a three-year term as an Educational Partner on the Industry Advisory Council for the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). Additionally, Bob was appointed to the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) International Board of Directors Executive committee, is Chair-Elect, and also served as first chair of the Industry Partners Council. Currently Board member of several nonprofit organizations, including National Aquarium, The Center for Philanthropy at Indiana University, The Mote Marine Laboratory, Bob is also past board chair of the Gateway Rehabilitation Center, the e-Philanthropy Foundation and the Boys’ Latin School.
Bob has also served on the Saint Stephen’s Episcopal School and Malcom Parcel Foundation boards, the Advisory Board for the Goucher College Fundraising Program and is a past member of the Board of Directors of the Giving Institute, formerly the American Association of Fundraising Counsel (AAFRC) and the AFP Foundation.
Bob frequently serves as a lecturer and presenter for Columbia University’s Masters in Philanthropy Management courses, the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), AFP and the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy (AHP) and has published articles for professional journals. He is currently co-authoring a text book on the psychology of philanthropy.
Prior to joining Ketchum in 1981, Bob served as Vice President for University Relations at The Catholic University of America; Director of Development for Arts and Sciences and Engineering and Associate Director of Annual Giving at The Johns Hopkins University; Assistant to the Headmaster at the Gilman School in Baltimore; and both taught and organized the development office at The Boys’ Latin School in Baltimore. He has decades of experience in development and capital/endowment campaigning.
Bob is a graduate of the Boys’ Latin School and the Johns Hopkins University. He and his wife, Carol, live in Anna Maria, Florida.
