Grant writing can be a lonely job. It’s easy to get disgruntled when others around you are recognized for their hard work but you remain invisible. However, there are steps you can take to overcome any feelings of isolation you may experience.

Most people I know who are in the grant writing profession sort of fell into it.

Creating a General Grant Proposal Template Contributed by:
Alyssa HanadaWednesday, May 04, 2011 (2 years 10 days ago)
As grant writers, it would be quite inefficient if we started from scratch every time we developed a new proposal. Creating a general template for each program that you’ll be applying for saves both time and resources.

Prospect Research — Where to start! Contributed by:
Alyssa HanadaWednesday, November 17, 2010 (2 years 178 days ago)
Whether you’re starting at a new agency as a grant writer or been with the same organization for years, finding new prospects and keeping track of them can be overwhelming. Obviously the type of prospect research you do depends on the type of agency you work at and the type of programs that need funding. However, the same general principles can be applied to no matter where you work.

Chasing the Money Contributed by:
Alyssa HanadaWednesday, October 13, 2010 (2 years 213 days ago)
An RFP just came out for a large funder with a less than a month turnaround. The award is up to $200K to implement technology based programming for youth in the age range your agency serves. It would require a plan for replicating your services nationwide and essentially double your service community. Suddenly you find yourself speed reading emails between the program head and the executive director.
“This would be great, we could really use this!” the program director writes.

Staff Grant Writer vs. Contract Grant Writer: The Ups and Downs of Each Contributed by:
Alyssa HanadaWednesday, August 04, 2010 (2 years 283 days ago)
I have to admit I was never a big fan of working the standard eight to five and reporting to someone. Growing up with an independent mom who had her own business always inspired me. So when I found a career path that would allow me to be my own boss, make my own hours and choose the agencies I wanted to work with, it sounded like a dream! Of course life as a consultant is not always easy. It requires staying on task (which can be difficult if you work from home and see that pile of laundry!), strong communication with clients and being a professional organizer!

Freshen Up Contributed by:

As a staff grant writer or a consultant that works with organizations in an ongoing capacity, it’s easy to get into a trance when developing grants for the same familiar programs. The words may start to blur together as sentences are recycled and you click those magical godsends: “copy” and “paste.”
In order to keep things interesting for both you and the funders that continue to support the programs, it’s important to refresh templates and make sure that spark of excitement comes back to the page. As a grant writer, it’s easy to get into a pattern of sitting behind the desk with a dollar goal in mind and to forget about the people and the stories behind the programs.

How to Gain Support for Those Pesky Operating Funds Contributed by:
Alyssa HanadaWednesday, September 30, 2009 (3 years 226 days ago)
It is one of the most common nonprofit woes: Foundations say they won’t support operating funds. So how do we cover our bottom line?!
Does this mean every time your agency approaches a foundation for a grant, it has to be for a new program? Of course not! That would not make sense for most agencies, especially in today’s economy. So how do you gain support to keep your agency running and get around the “no operating funds” stance?

Managing Short Deadlines Contributed by:
Alyssa HanadaWednesday, July 15, 2009 (3 years 303 days ago)
It’s Friday afternoon. You are just about to turn off the computer and go on a mental vacation.
That’s when you get the e-mail: “We were just notified of this great opportunity from X Foundation (or even better, a federal grant!), but, um, the deadline is next Wednesday. Can you do it?”

Try this. Go to google.com. Type in
grant resources and click “search.” Check out the results: 1-10 of 78,500,000 pages. As I write this, the number has undoubtedly grown.
